Nigeria League 1 (NPL)

Nigeria’s top club football competition is called the Nigerian Premier League (NPL). The financial impact and declining fortunes that have plagued sports leagues since the late 2000s have hurt the Nigerian Premier League, among many others. The Nigeria National League (NNL) supplies the system with players—League Management Company (LMC), which organizes it.

Nigeria League 1 (NPL)

The Nigeria League 1 is the name now used for it. Before 2003, it was called the “Nigeria Premier League” from 1993 through 2000.

Additionally, it has been referred to as the “Nigerian Premiership” (2000–2003), “Nigerian Professional League” (1990–93), Nigerian National League–First Division (1979–1990), “the (Nigerian) National League” or “Nigerian Football League” (1972–1979), and more recently, “Nigeria Professional Football League” (2014–2023).

Background of Nigeria League 1

On September 9, 2017, Plateau United F.C. defeated Enugu Rangers 2-0 to claim league supremacy for the 2017 campaign.

As a result of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) controversy, the league was indefinitely postponed in July 2018. Lobi Stars were at the top of the standings, so they were named the league’s lone representative in the 2019 CAF Champions League.

24 teams made up the league. The Nigeria National League saw the promotion of four players. From the incomplete season before, there were still 20 teams. Two groups of 12 teams each were formed from them. In Lagos’ NPFL Super Six championship playoff, the top three teams from each group competed for the championship. With 12 points from 5 games, The People’s Elephant finished first on the log.

Due to their history of rivalry, Enyimba vs. Kano Pillars is regarded as the biggest game of the year. In their 12-year history, neither team has finished below the top eight.
