The top tier of Egyptian Premier League football system is the professional association football league, the Egyptian Premier League, or Nile League. It has eighteen teams and uses the Egyptian Second Division A’s promotion and relegation system. Since its foundation in 1948, it has united local leagues and seen the participation of 70 clubs. Egyptian Premier League

With a record 16 wins in the CAF Champions League, the Egyptian Premier League is a top national league and is ranked second in Africa by the CAF. CAF awarded Al Ahly the title of African Club of the Century. The league also won the 2012 violence at Port Said Stadium; games were played behind closed doors until 2017, when local security officials permitted supporters to attend some games. The league started to welcome thousands of supporters in 2021, with an initial attendance of 100. Since then, the league has grown to rank among the best in the Middle East and Africa. 

History

El Sekka El Hadid was the first association football club in Egypt after it was occupied by the British in 1903. Egyptian clubs began to rise to prominence after the Sultan Hussein Cup was founded in 1917. The first Egypt Cup was won by Zamalek in 1922; no British teams participated. The Cairo League, Egypt’s first major football league, was founded in 1922 and comprised Cairo clubs. Two teams started dominating the Egypt Cup and the league: Zamalek and Al-Ahly.

The Cairo Zone Competition was overtaken by the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) in 1938 and renamed the Cairo League. In 1948 The Egyptian Premier League was established by royal order since the EFA felt that a national league was required. Playing its first season in 1948, the Egyptian Premier League demonstrated the increasing popularity of association football in Egypt.
