Ecuadorian Football Federation

The top football league in Ecuador, the Liga Pro Bet593, is played by sixteen clubs and is referred to as the Liga Pro or Serie A. Like the Primera Categoría, it uses a promotion and relegation system for its lower division. The season, which often consists of several phases of competition, goes from February to December. The national championship between the top clubs of Ecuador’s two regional divisions served as the prototype for the Serie A, which was initially not even a league.

The competition was first conducted in 1957 and has been contested annually. In 2005, there were two victors. According to IFFHS, the league is the fourth strongest in South America and the eleventh-strongest football league globally as of 2022. Eleven teams have won the title of Ecuadorian champions, with Barcelona having won the most with sixteen. All the Ecuador leagues matches are live score results are shown on Score808lives.com.

History

The Guayas Football Association became a professional league and hosted its inaugural professional competition for affiliated clubs in 1950, marking the beginning of Ecuador’s football history. Río Guayas won the first Guayaquil Professional Football Championship in 1951. The Pichincha football organization chose to go professional in 1954 and started holding its professional competition. 1954 was the inaugural Inter-Andean Professional Championship, which LDU Quito won.

The Campeonato Professional de Fútbol de Guayaquil and the Campeonato Professional Interandino were the highest football divisions in Ecuador. In 1957, a national football tournament was set up for the champions of both leagues. The winners and runners-up of the Campeonato Professional de Fútbol de Guayaquil and the Campeonato Professional Interandino faced off in the inaugural Ecuadorian Football Championship. After winning the competition, Emelec became Ecuador’s first football national champion.

The Ecuadorian club football competition known as the Campeonato Ecuatoriano was first held in 1957 and resurrected in 1960 with eight teams instead of only four. It continued until 1967, when the national title was moved to the Primera Categoría, regional competitions were abandoned, and the Segunda Categoría—the second division of Ecuadorian football—was formed.

The Primera Categoría was split into Serie A and Serie B in 1971. While Serie B was combined into Segunda from 1983 to 1988, Serie A remained the highest division. The Campeonato Ecuatoriano was split into Apertura and Clausura in 2005, and it reverted to its original year-long structure in 2006.
